The inaugural meeting of the Multilateral Working Group on Water Resources Management took place in Urgench as part of the Aral Sea Wetlands Project—a joint initiative between the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The project, titled “Conservation and sustainable management of lakes, wetlands, and riparian corridors as pillars of a resilient and land degradation neutral Aral basin landscape supporting sustainable livelihoods,” aims to ensure sustainable and inclusive water resource management in the Aral Sea Basin.
Establishment of a Multilateral Task Force comprising over 20 experts from government bodies, academia, NGOs, and local communities.
Focus areas included environmental flow guarantees, climate-adjusted irrigation standards, infrastructure assessments, and inter-agency coordination mechanisms.
A detailed action plan is under development, to guide future implementation.
National and international experts will conduct a field mission to update data on the condition of wetlands in the Aral Sea region. This data will support a new water supply improvement programme critical for wetland conservation and community resilience.
The wetlands are recognized for their ecological, climatic, social, and cultural importance, making their preservation key to both regional environmental security and broader sustainable development goals.
